Most positions being cut provide instructional support directly to students throughout the school day–support that not only helps the students they work with, but also helps classroom teachers and media specialists reach more learners more effectively. Many of our paras provide car duty, hall duty and lunch duty.
The elementary level has had an unprecedented amount of cuts, which will greatly stress our schools next year.
The media paraprofessionals were not placed in the pool to be rehired with first grade and kindergarten paraprofessionals, irrespective of their skills, experience, or seniority.
We are upset about the cuts because they are socially unjust: the most heavily cut employees are the lowest-paid in terms of salary. Some of these paraprofessionals are the sole support of their family or the only source of health insurance for their dependants.
